You are in the exclusive Watsu suite, at the Golden Door Spa and Resort Elysia in the Hunter Valley, your own private sanctuary in which you can relax your body in ways that are not possible on land.

You Can Contour Your Hair Now

You Can Contour Your Hair Now | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

Until now, beauty bloggers have managed to contour every inch of their bodies, except one: their hair.

The inevitable next step has been taken, and luckily it’s way less weird than it sounds. “Hair contouring is a big trend this summer,” says Jax Williard, a colorist at Fekkai Soho. “Clients have been requesting more face-framing highlights, which gives a stronger look.”

So, how does it work? Not with makeup, but it does involve painting your hair. “The balayage highlights are painted based on your face shape and what parts of your face you want to accentuate,” says Williard. “As opposed to the ombré look, which seems to be fading out, this coloring technique has the color starting higher up and really contours the face.” This trend is defined by dimensional color and chunky, not streaky, highlights. Since there are dark colors near the top, it’s a great option for women looking to transition out of their ombré hair for a more updated style.

Tips For Better Hair From Australia's Best Hairdresser

Tips For Better Hair From Australia's Best Hairdresser | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

Sometimes you gotta go back to basics. After all, can't build anything great without a good foundation, right?

That's why we called up hairstylist Caterina DiBiase. She's the L'Oréal Professionnel Ambassador and holds the title of 2016 Australian Hairdresser of the Year, so we knew she'd be able to tell us why our hair always feels so much better after a visit the salon even if we use the same products (and how the hell to get the same feeling for ourselves, for real).

You need to shampoo twice

"I really recommend shampooing your hair twice. It's like a double cleanse that you'd do on your face to remove makeup and clean the skin. Although the exception is if you're washing your hair everyday, then shampooing twice is probably not necessary," DiBiase said.

Spot-on Skin

Spot-on Skin | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

The occasional pimple is annoying — but acne can be painful, embarrassing and still a threat in adulthood. Australasian College of Dermatologists spokesman Ernest Tan says most people get acne on their face or trunk (chest and back), which is classified as mild (whiteheads and blackheads), moderate (inflamed papules) or severe (cystic acne).

Dr Tan says there are various causes of acne, including hormones, genetic disposition and increase in oil gland production. “Other triggers can be stress and medications such as the pill,” he says. “Diet probably has only a minor influence; we believe it is more genetic, hormonal and stress related.”

And, although he says acne occurs in most people during their teenage years, 10-20 per cent of adults suffer from acne. “Most people with adult acne are women,” he adds. “Hormones can fluctuate during the menstrual cycle, polycystic ovarian disease can cause it and the pill or Mirena implants can trigger acne.”

Holidays get a health kick — even in Bali

Holidays get a health kick — even in Bali | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

NORMALLY, if a man lent over my horizontal body and took both my wrists in his hands, I’d feel a little threatened.

But with the gentle pitter-patter of a fountain filling the silence, layers of fluffy white towels and nothing but natural light streaming into the treatment room I’m lying in, I feel instantly calmed.

David the acupuncturist is taking my pulse before tapping superfine needles into my ankles, feet and legs. I barely register the pin pricks. My nose twitches at the smell of burning, delivered by some special technique using hot needles, but I happily entrust my health to the expert at my Bali wellness retreat, Como Shambhala Estate.

How lasers can fix your skin

How lasers can fix your skin | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

Two decades ago, laser technology was still in its infancy. Long down-times, nasty side- effects and high costs prevented many from undergoing laser and light therapies.

Today, these treatments are a booming trend –often used to assist with hair and tattoo removal, and to treat a range of skin concerns, including acne, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles.

“Laser and light and related treatments are a rapidly evolving and exciting area, with new treatments and devices becoming available,” says Sydney dermatologist Dr John Sullivan. “Best results often involve tailored treatments combining laser and light treatments at the same time.“

What You Should Really Be Asking Your Hairdresser For

What You Should Really Be Asking Your Hairdresser For | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

For most of us, going to the hairdresser isn’t exactly the smoothest experience. We may go in with strong ideas (a blunt fringe! Highlights! Layers!), but in the end it’s common to forgo the fumbled descriptions and hand gestures and just shove an old photo of Alexa Chung dug up from the depths of Google Images into your hairdresser’s face. Although this approach is simple and somewhat effective, it can sometimes lead to not getting the haircut you went in wanting.

The solution? Know your hairdresser terms. The difference between a square base line and a round one is the difference between your dream cut and a good cry in the car afterwards.

YOU HAVE ARM-NE

Why it happens: "Tiny red or white rough bumps on your arms are likely a condition called keratosis pilaris — not true acne," says Heidi Waldorf, MD, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital. This genetic condition causes the buildup of keratin, a protein that plugs hair follicles.

6 tips for dealing with scalp sensitivity and dandruff

6 tips for dealing with scalp sensitivity and dandruff | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

Ah, the dreaded 'd' word. Sure, it's not the sexiest of topics, but those tiny white flecks are a pervasive problem for over 50 per cent of the population.

Any number of things can cause dandruff – from metabolic and hormonal fluctuations, to stress, a weakened immune system, and seasonal change. The most common cause is the overgrowth of a natural, yeast-like fungus called malassezia, which intensifies the overproduction of skin cells.

When skin cells begin to divide too rapidly, there's a build-up on the scalp, which leads to those unsightly and often itchy white flakes.

Award Winning Hair Stylist Busts Common Hair Myths

When it comes to achieving lustrous, glossy hair, there are plenty of us out there willing to believe pretty much anything. Sacrifice an ash blonde lamb with frizz-free wool on the last day of Fashion Week, you say? Done.

But when it comes to what actually works when it comes to your hair, sadly, not everything you hear is 100 percent true. Split ends, for instance, can't really be fixed, no matter how much homemade organic avocado treatment you use.

So, in order to get the record straight (or in loose waves, depending on how you like it), The Huffington Post Australia asked award-winning international hair stylistAnthony Nader to help us bust some popular hair myths. Be prepared -- you might not like all of what he has to say.

Tattoos are about to get much less permanent

Tattoos are about to get much less permanent | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

Tattoos, like diamonds, are usually thought of as acquisitions that last forever. But a start-up company called Ephemeral wants to change that.

The five-person firm is developing two products, intended to work together for commitment-phobic tattoo recipients. The first is a new kind of tattoo ink that is designed to break down and disappear after roughly a year. The second is a removal solution, which a tattoo artist can use to trace over the tattoo and make it go away even sooner.

The company’s CEO and co-founder, Seung Shin, explained that the company had its genesis in a tattoo he got on his arm that didn’t sit well with his family.

Is this the reason you’re not losing weight?

Is this the reason you’re not losing weight? | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

SOME of us know that we eat too much, or need to get to the gym more frequently to lose weight but then there are those of us who know that our weight does not correspond to the diet and exercise choices we make.

For some reason, even when we consume a calorie and carb controlled diet and exercise regularly, we still never seem to budge a kilo. Whenever I see a client who comes to an appointment after battling weight issues for many years, and find that they are carrying 20-30 extra kilos, immediately I wonder if their insulin levels may be out of whack.

Insulin is the hormone that controls both glucose and fat metabolism in the body, and high levels over time can make weight loss very difficult.

Why you should never fall asleep with your makeup on

Why you should never fall asleep with your makeup on | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

WE’RE all guilty of falling asleep in our make-up after a big night out — but making a habit of it could have more severe consequences than you might think. Of course, when you’re bombarded with constant beauty tips it can be difficult to know which ones to take seriously — especially when some people even recommend sleeping in your slap to achieve the ultimate rock chick chic.

But now, Bustle have revealed dermatologists’ gruesome truths about the havoc your make-up can wreak on your skin — and it’ll leave you reaching for the nearest face wipe.

Even when you do take your make-up off, it can sometimes seem like way too much effort to remove every last smudge of eye make-up — especially if you’re wearing waterproof products.

But experts have warned that not doing so could lead to unsightly infections — which could even have implications for your vision.

The Secret to Ageless Skin May Be Hiding in Your Gut

The Secret to Ageless Skin May Be Hiding in Your Gut | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

There's a deeper meaning to the phrase "trust your gut" when it comes to skincare. In Dr. Nigma Talib's celebrity-favourite book, Younger Skin Starts in the Gut, she explains the effects that gluten, dairy, wine, and sugar have on your face. In fact, she can look at you and immediately be able to know which of these groups may be causing acne, fine lines, puffiness, or sallowness on your face.

So eating a big piece of carrot cake or two slices of pizza may be doing more than just expanding your stomach; it may also be harming your gut. And when your gut isn't healthy, it can inflame or prematurely age your skin.

"The foods you eat every day will eventually show up on your face," Dr. Talib told us. "There are four main faces of ageing that I've seen in my years of practice. They are gluten face, dairy face, sugar face, and wine face. Not only can these foods cause premature ageing, but they can also cause puffiness, unwanted acne, skin redness, and pigmentation, to name a few."

Create a home spa experience

Create a home spa experience | Health and Beauty | Scoop.it

There's no need to fork out hundreds of dollars to get the spa feeling when you can recreate it in the comfort of your own home.

Preparing your space

With a little planning and imagination you can recreate the essence and ambience of the spa experience at home.

Firstly, think about setting some time aside, ideally an evening, when you have privacy. Once you have secured some personal space, set the tone with an ordered and clean space, some relaxing music and a fragrant candle. If you have a bath, now is the time to relish it.

Spa beauty products and gadgets

Next, think about what treatments you would like and purchase your products. I would suggest starting with a quality, pure bristle body brush to dry brush your body. This treatment removes dead skin cells and is especially beneficial in the winter months when skin is driest.

Home treatments

While your face and body are being treated, wrap your hair in conditioning mask. You can purchase lush, ready-made hair masks or you can use pure coconut oil, which is especially beneficial for dry, damaged hair. After your face, body and hair have been thoroughly cleansed and rejuvenated; finish by giving yourself a manicure and pedicure.
